IPRCL Tenders ₹77 Crore 6.25 MW Offshore Wind Prototype Project Off Thoothukudi Port, Tamil Nadu
Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRCL) is tendering India's first offshore wind farm prototype off the coast of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The project is estimated to cost ₹77 crore.
The prototype will have a single 6.25 MW turbine. It will be located about 1,650 metres from the Southern Breakwater of the Inner Harbour at Thoothukudi.
The tender covers design, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning. It is followed by two years of operation and maintenance.
Thoothukudi was selected for its strong winds and existing port infrastructure. The prototype will be used to test marine logistics and grid connectivity, which are needed for future offshore wind projects. Tamil Nadu has more than 10,734 MW of installed renewable energy capacity.
Hero Future Energies Global CEO Srivatsan Iyer said the project could raise confidence among developers and policymakers. He noted that offshore wind remains costlier than onshore wind. The source gives no tender deadline, bid submission dates or commissioning timeline.
