IMFA's 100,000 TPA Kalinganagar Greenfield Ferro Chrome Project Nears Commissioning, Odisha
Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Limited (IMFA) has obtained the Consent to Operate and Factory License for its greenfield ferro chrome expansion project at Kalinganagar, Odisha, clearing the way for commissioning trials. The 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) project, known as KNR-1, comprises two 33 MVA furnaces.
The first furnace is scheduled to be switched on during the week of the announcement, with first hot metal tapping expected between August 15 and August 20, 2026. The second furnace is slated for pre-commissioning in September 2026.
The Kalinganagar greenfield project follows IMFA's earlier acquisition of Tata Steel's ferrochrome facility in the same region (KNR-2) for ₹707.26 crore, which was funded through internal accruals and is already fully operational across its four furnaces.
With the KNR-1 greenfield project set to come online, IMFA's total installed ferro chrome capacity is expected to exceed 500,000 tpa, reinforcing its position as India's largest ferro chrome producer. The company's expansion is supported by captive chrome ore mining and proximity to Paradeep port, which IMFA has cited as advantages for cost and logistics efficiency in ferrochrome production, a key raw material for stainless steel manufacturing
