GHCL receives environment clearance for Rs 6,500 crore

Power Generation  -  Dec 16,2024  -

GHCL Ltd has secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change for its Soda Ash Greenfield Project in Kutch, Gujarat.

The approval, granted on December 12, 2024, paves the way for the company to establish a 1.1 MMTPA Soda Ash plant over the next six years with a capital investment of Rs 6,500 crore.

“This new Soda Ash plant will play a crucial role in advancing India’s vision of Green Energy and AtmaNirbharta,” said R.S. Jalan, Managing Director of GHCL Limited.

India’s Soda Ash demand is projected to reach 7.0 MTPA as the country aims for 500 GW of installed green energy capacity by 2030. With a current production of 3.6 MTPA—just 6% of the global capacity—India heavily relies on imports to meet its needs.

GHCL, the second-largest soda ash producer in India, plans to almost double its production capacity with this new facility.

The Greenfield plant will feature state-of-the-art technology and focus on carbon neutrality, exploring green energy resources to power operations.

Additionally, the project is expected to boost local economies by encouraging the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in logistics and packaging.

It will also contribute to the economic development of the region by creating employment opportunities and uplifting local communities.
