Eight-Member Taiwanese Delegation Explores Southern Tamil Nadu for Next Wave of Manufacturing Investment
An eight-member Taiwanese delegation, representing three companies, is touring the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts of southern Tamil Nadu to assess industrial opportunities for a new wave of manufacturing investment. The delegation is evaluating industrial parks managed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and logistical connectivity via the V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port at Thoothukudi.
The companies involved in the delegation are Wan Hai Lines, a container shipping company; Delta Electronics, a global power supply manufacturer with an existing facility in Bengaluru; and Sheng Long Bio-Tech, an aquaculture industry player. According to Tirunelveli District Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Gunasingh Chellathurai, the three companies are together considering investments of around ₹80,000 crore in the region.
The delegation inspected the VOC Port to study its container handling capacity, storage infrastructure and export-import facilities as part of its assessment. Tamil Nadu's electronics and semiconductor manufacturing growth has historically been concentrated around Chennai, but rising land costs in the Chennai-Sriperumbudur-Oragadam industrial belt are pushing both the state government and investors to look toward southern districts, which offer larger land parcels at lower cost.
The visit is currently in an exploratory phase, with no official investment amounts, timelines or specific project details yet confirmed by the companies. If the projects materialise, they are expected to significantly expand southern Tamil Nadu's industrial base and position the state to compete more strongly with Gujarat and Karnataka for high-value electronics and semiconductor investment, aligning with the broader national push to develop domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
