Daimler India Commercial Vehicles to Invest ₹4,000 Crore in Tamil Nadu to Expand BharatBenz Operations
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), maker of BharatBenz trucks and buses, has outlined a fresh investment of approximately ₹4,000 crore in Tamil Nadu to expand its manufacturing, research and development and technology readiness capabilities. The investment was announced as part of a non-binding facilitation Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave.
The additional investment will take DICV's cumulative investment in India to over ₹14,500 crore, reaffirming the company's long-term commitment to building BharatBenz in India. The expansion is expected to create approximately 400 jobs, supporting product development, manufacturing capacity, research and development, infrastructure and future technology programmes.
DICV's operations are centred around a 400-acre integrated manufacturing and R&D facility in Oragadam, near Chennai, which currently employs over 4,000 workers and has received investment of over ₹9,500 crore. The facility maintains a localisation rate of around 92% across its product value chain, supported by a network of 400 local suppliers.
BharatBenz has over 2,20,000 trucks and buses operating in India, served through a network of over 420 dealers. Beyond domestic operations, the Chennai plant functions as an international manufacturing and engineering hub for Daimler Truck's global network, having exported more than 75,000 completed vehicles and over 330 million component parts to more than 70 markets, while also supplying transmissions from Chennai to Daimler Truck plants in Germany.
