BMC invites Rs 918 crore tender for flyover arms of Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road

Infrastructure  -  Sep 20,2024  -

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a ₹918 crore tender for the construction of two elevated flyover arms for the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR).

According to the BMC's tender document, the cost of building these two flyover arms exceeds the total expenditure for constructing the entire 2.9-km-long GMLR by 25%. The GMLR was completed at a cost of ₹732 crore and opened for traffic in 2021.

Tenders for the new arms were issued on September 14. However, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra has requested the BMC to reconsider the alignment of the proposed flyover arms, as they conflict with a planned metro railway corridor.

The BMC plans for the elevated flyover arms to start from T-Junction Nagar on the Sion-Panvel Highway in the eastern suburbs, serving vehicles traveling between Vashi and Ghatkopar.

Civic officials noted that the main goal is to alleviate congestion at the T-Junction, which experiences significant traffic delays throughout the day. "Motorists often spend over 15 minutes in traffic jams at this signal," an official stated.

"The new flyovers will begin at this T junction and connect with the existing GMLR. This design will allow vehicles heading towards Ghatkopar to access the bridge without stopping at the junction, while those traveling towards Navi Mumbai can enter the expressway via the GMLR," the official added.
