Andhra Pradesh Signs ₹140 Crore MoU with CSIR-NGRI for Lithium and Gallium Exploration in Kadapa Basin
The Andhra Pradesh Department of Mines and Geology signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) on August 12, 2026, for exploration of lithium and gallium deposits in the Kadapa Basin. The agreement was signed at the State Secretariat in Vijayawada in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Mines Minister Kollu Ravindra.
The exploration project focuses on the Vempalle region of the Kadapa Basin, where preliminary studies by NGRI in Thummalapalle and surrounding areas have indicated the presence of lithium and gallium deposits. Initial studies have estimated lithium concentrations of up to 1,000 parts per million (ppm) and gallium concentrations of up to 250 ppm in the region. Detailed geological studies under the MoU will help determine the extent and potential of these deposits.
The exploration project carries a budget of ₹140 crore, to be funded entirely by the National Mineral Exploration Trust, a statutory trust created under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
On the same day, the Andhra Pradesh government signed a separate MoU with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad-TEXMiN for mining-sector technology and skill development. Under this agreement, a Centre of Excellence for Mining will be established in Andhra Pradesh, focused on strengthening research capabilities and enhancing skills required for modern mining operations.
Lithium is used in rechargeable batteries, ceramics, lubricants and alloys, while gallium is used in semiconductors, light-emitting diodes, integrated circuits and solar-related technologies. Both are classified as critical minerals due to their strategic industrial use and limited supply chains. Together, the two agreements are expected to advance critical mineral exploration and strengthen mining capabilities in Andhra Pradesh.
