Adani Group to Set Up 2,000-Bed Multi-Specialty Hospital in NewTown as West Bengal Expands Healthcare Infrastructure
The West Bengal government has signed an agreement with the Adani Group to set up a 2,000-bed multi-specialty hospital in NewTown, Kolkata, with land allotted for the project. Of the total capacity, 1,000 beds will be reserved free of cost for economically weaker patients, while the remaining 1,000 beds will operate commercially to support advanced medical technologies and specialised tertiary care.
The announcement was made at a programme at the state secretariat, Nabanna, where Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari outlined a broader roadmap to strengthen healthcare infrastructure from block-level health centres to advanced medical institutions in Kolkata. The state government said it is committed to widespread transformation of both public and private healthcare systems.
As part of the same push, the state has announced plans to establish four new medical colleges in Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Paschim Bardhaman and Dakshin Dinajpur, aimed at expanding medical education capacity in underserved regions. A proposal for a second AIIMS in North Bengal has also been put forward.
The initiatives are intended to build an integrated healthcare network across preventive, primary, secondary and tertiary care, while attracting greater private sector investment to elevate West Bengal's position as a regional healthcare destination.
