AAI commences ILS signal testing at Navi Mumbai airport

Infrastructure  -  Jul 18,2024  -

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started testing of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) signals at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The airport, which is slated to begin its first phase of operations by March 2025, has begun these tests from 16 July, 2024 and will continue until 20 July, 2024.

The testing will help assess various operational aspects of the ILS on the runway during this period. ILS functions as a precision runway approach aid utilising dual radio beams to provide pilots with both vertical and horizontal guidance during landing approaches.

Nearly 20 tests are conducted before ILS implementation to ensure operational readiness, focusing on signal accuracy and guidance precision for safe aircraft operations. Calibration testing at the airport has been completed successfully.

Developed by the Adani Group, the project will be completed in five phases, and will accommodate a total of 90 million passengers annually. The initial phase is expected to handle 20 million passengers per annum.
