Work on the Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant, proposed at Brahmapuram, will commence soon. The private company that was awarded the contract has started bringing the machines to the site.
Kochi company officials said the preliminary work, such as preparing the ground, is expected to begin soon. The work is scheduled to be completed within a year.
The civic body will facilitate various needs, such as power and water for the CBG plant.
About 100 million liters of water per day (MLD) will have to be supplied to the BPCL Kochi refinery for the trial run of the plant. Corporation has proposed the BPCL Kochi refinery to draw water from Kadambrayar, which flows past the solid waste treatment plant site at Brahmapuram. At the same time, the shortage of water in Kadambrayar is a problem.
The BPCL Kochi refinery had approached the city authorities for setting up a CBG plant in Brahmapuram a few years ago. At the time, local authorities declined the offer, citing the fact that a waste-to-energy plant would come up in Brahmapuram.
