Work on 5 & 6 lines for Borivali-Virar route to commence in December

Infrastructure  -  Nov 21,2023  -

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is anticipated to begin building the fifth and sixth lines between Borivali and Virar.

The first duty will be to remove any constructions that are in the way of the proposed alignment of the corridor.

Presently, the suburban network of Indian Railways consists of four lines: one each from Churchgate to Mumbai Central and Borivali to Virar; moreover, there is a fifth line that connects Mumbai Central to Borivali and a sixth line that runs between Khar and Goregaon. By the end of 2025, the sixth line is expected to be extended to Borivali.

The purpose of the expansion project is to effectively segregate mail-express and suburban section rail traffic between Mumbai Central and Virar, for improved efficiency. This is the first contract awarded for the project, which is being executed under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A.

Overall, 47 railway structures, including booking offices, relay rooms and other areas are slated for demolition to make way for additional tracks. The bidding process for the construction of foot overbridges will begin soon.
