Vikram Solar Inaugurates 6 GW Solar PV Module Plant At Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu; Capacity Hits 15.5 GW
Vikram Solar has inaugurated a 6 GW solar PV module manufacturing plant at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. The facility was virtually inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay. With the commissioning of the new production line, Vikram Solar's total solar PV module manufacturing capacity has risen to 15.5 GW per year.
The plant is located on a nearly 186-acre greenfield campus. The facility is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 skilled professionals in the region. Vikram Solar currently operates module manufacturing facilities in West Bengal (Falta) and Tamil Nadu (Oragadam and Vallam), in addition to the new Gangaikondan site.
The Gangaikondan campus is planned to expand beyond module manufacturing in the coming years to include solar cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing, bringing multiple stages of the solar PV value chain under one location. Under this roadmap, Vikram Solar plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY2027, with a further 3 GW expansion by FY2028, and 12 GW of wafer and ingot manufacturing capacity by FY2029-30.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, said the investment reflects the company's long-term commitment to Tamil Nadu, local employment and building a more self-reliant clean energy value chain in India. The company said the integrated manufacturing model is aimed at strengthening supply chain resilience, improving quality control, reducing logistics costs and increasing domestic value addition, supporting India's push toward reduced dependence on imported solar components.
