Vedanta close on deciding location for world’s first fully green aluminium plant

Metallurgical Industries  -  Mar 20,2025  -

Vedanta Limited has almost finalised the site for what it claims will be the world’s first fully green aluminium plant, Chairman Anil Agarwal said.

In a recent interview, he outlined the company’s plans to expand aluminium production and integrate renewable energy into its operations.

The development comes as Vedanta moves forward with a demerger that will create four independent entities focused on aluminium, oil and gas, power, iron and steel, and base metals. The restructuring has received shareholder and creditor approval, with completion expected in the first quarter of the next fiscal year.

Vedanta Aluminium is increasing production capacity by 3 million tonnes. “We are creating another 30 lakh tonnes of aluminium production,” Agarwal said, adding that the company has acquired one of Odisha’s largest high-grade bauxite mines to support this expansion.

The company is also in the final stages of selecting a location for its green aluminium production facility. “This will be the first kind of aluminium production with green metal—complete green metal,” Agarwal said.

He added that aluminium is a key transition material for industrial and infrastructure growth, with applications in transportation, defence, and power transmission.
