Union Cabinet Approves ₹8,970 Crore Guwahati-Tezpur NH-15 Corridor with IAF Emergency Landing Facility in Assam
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved development of the Guwahati-Tezpur corridor on National Highway-15 in Assam on August 6, 2026. The 135.871-km, four-lane access-controlled corridor carries a total capital cost of ₹8,970.20 crore and will be developed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll basis.
The project includes construction of a 4.9-km Emergency Landing Facility on the Tezpur bypass, planned in coordination with the Indian Air Force. The corridor is expected to decongest the existing NH-27 East-West Corridor on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river.
Five major bypasses spanning 58.7 km will be built at Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli and Tezpur to ease congestion through densely populated stretches. The project also provides for 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, 46 underpasses, an elephant underpass at the Tezpur bypass, and 210 km of service roads.
The corridor is projected to double average travel speeds and halve travel time along the route, while improving road safety, fuel efficiency and vehicle operating costs. It will provide connectivity to eight PM Gati-Shakti economic nodes, including industrial parks, and improve access to key logistics and social infrastructure across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
