TFL commences commercial production of world's first green soda ash in Thoothukudi

Industrial Productx  -  Nov 06,2023  -

A notable milestone was reached by Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals & Fertilisers Limited (TFL), a well-known soda ash producer and a division of Singapore-based AM International, when it started producing environmentally friendly soda ash commercially at its Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, facility.

With the implementation of this innovative initiative, TFL will become the first firm globally to create carbon-neutral soda ash, having achieved carbon-neutrality in the soda ash manufacturing process through the innovative use of cutting-edge carbon-capture technology.

TFL has put in place a CO2 Recovery Plant to remove carbon emissions from the coal that powers its boiler to produce steam in order to create this green soda ash.

This captured carbon is then transformed into biomass fuel, effectively eliminating the reliance on fossil fuels and achieving carbon neutrality during manufacturing.

In addition, the company utilizes green ammonium imported from Egypt in the production of its nearly carbon-neutral soda ash.

Ashwin Muthiah, Founder-Chairman of AMIH, Singapore, expressed his satisfaction with the successful research and development efforts, stating that TFL has managed to capture CO2 from the flue gases of the biomass boiler and repurpose it to create a near-zero carbon impact, a significant step toward a circular economy.
