The Tata Group seeks partnership for its proposed chip fabrication plant at Dholera in Gujarat, and is in talks with two major Taiwanese chipmakers Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and UMC Group.
The Indian conglomerate aims to make mature nodes of 65 nanometre (nm) before moving to 48 nm and then to 28 nm, required to support applications ranging from graphic processor units (GPU) to consumer electronics and the internet of things.
The Tata Group has finalised the details of the land for the plant and is likely to break ground soon. It recently announced plans to construct a semiconductor factory in Dholera. The initial capacity of the plant is estimated to be 25,000 wafers per month, which is between 700-1,000 semiconductor chips per day.
UMC and PSMC, a pure play foundry are headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. PSMC recently opened a USD 5.3 billion chip manufacturing plant in Japan.
