Surat Municipal Corporation approves solid waste processing plant at Umber

The Surat Municipal Corporation's standing committe has approved a solid waste processing plant at Umber to be established at the cost of Rs 345 crore.

The existing landfill site at Khajod which attained maximum capacity was closed.  
A new solid waste processing plant with capacity of 3,000 metric tonne per day will be developed at Umber on 3.40 lakh sq mt area.

The project includes processing, treatment and disposal facilities of solid waste. In an earlier attempt, SMC failed to find any operator. However, in the second attempt one processor applied and was awarded the project.

The project is to be developed within 18 months. The operator will run the plant for years after completion.

Earlier, under Swachh Bharat Mission, green waste processing plant at the cost of Rs 207 crore, solid waste processing plant at Rs 157 crore and for landfill site for Rs 43 crore was approved.
