Japanese technolgy major Sharp Corporation has plans to set up a display fabrication unit in India, and has approached the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)with the proposal.
The move could position India as a key hub, as it could be amongst the company's largest manufacturing facilities outside of Japan.
Sharp is actively seeking local partnerships and land. The expected investment could be USD three to six billion, with land requirement of 1,000-odd acres, which is under discussion.
The plan is to set up a Gen10+ facility, the latest high-end type, to manufacture screens which be used across all devices, such as monitors, and video conferencing facilities except mobile phones. Demand for TVs with 65-inch or larger screens, or Gen10+ flat panel displays (FPDs), is growing.
The investment, under the India Semiconductor Mission, will look to boost local manufacturing for growing local demand and reduce imports, through technology and state collaborations.
