Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that the second phase of the expansion and modernisation of Chennai international airport is to be completed by March 2026.

He was replying to a query raised by Tamil Nadu Member of Parliament Vaiko on the status of Phase 2 expansion of Chennai International Airport in the Rajya Sabha.

The Phase-II involves the development of Terminal-3 to enhance the airport’s capacity to 35 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The passenger facilities like additional check-in counters, Immigration counters, Automatic Tray Return Systems in Security Check and additional baggage belts are also part of the Phase-II development.

The Airports Authority of India has undertaken the expansion and modernisation of Chennai Airport in two phases at a total cost of ₹2,467 crore. Under Phase-I, a new Integrated Terminal Building has been constructed, increasing the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 23 MPPA to 30 MPPA. The terminal has been operational since July 2023 and all the passenger facilities are accessible to the passengers.
