Oil India Discovers Natural Gas at Godavari-1 Appraisal Well in KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 Shallow Offshore Block, Krishna-Godavari Basin

Petroleum Oct 24,2026

Oil India Limited (OIL) has discovered natural gas in the Matsyapuri formation in the shallow offshore waters of the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin. The discovery was made in the KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 block, where OIL is the sole operator under the Discovered Small Field (DSF) programme. The Matsyapuri formation had not been appraised earlier.

The find was made through the Godavari-1 well, drilled as an appraisal well. Hydrocarbons were identified in one of the selected pay zones at a depth of 2,024 to 2,027 metres. Production testing of the zone began on October 16, 2026.

During testing, the well flowed natural gas to the surface at about 100,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD). The maximum flow rate during continuous testing reached 200,000 SCMD. Condensate production was about 170 barrels per day, with an API gravity of 55.8 degrees at 60°F. Water was also produced, and wellhead pressure was recorded at 1,815 psi.

OIL is preparing to test the next higher zone in the well to assess its hydrocarbon potential. The company has not disclosed estimated reserves, commercial viability, investment size or a development timeline. Further appraisal and testing will determine the potential of the identified zones.
