Odisha Identifies 45 pumped storage projects for renewable energy storage & development

Power Generation  -  Mar 12,2025  -

Odisha government has identified 45 potential sites for the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs).

These projects are aimed at improving energy storage and management, a critical component for the efficient integration of renewable energy sources like wind and solar into the grid.

As part of this initiative, 10 PSP projects are already slated for implementation by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), with the state government setting the stage for their timely execution.

The projects will help address the challenges posed by the intermittent nature of renewable energy by storing excess power during periods of low demand and releasing it when needed.

In addition to PSU-led projects, private companies are also actively developing their PSPs in Odisha. These projects are being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging competition and fostering private sector involvement in the state’s renewable energy transition.

One of the most notable projects is a 1000 MW PSP, being developed by Sangamam Power Project Company in the Koraput district. This ambitious venture reflects Odisha’s commitment to bolstering clean energy capacity and contributing to India’s broader goals for sustainable energy
