NRL refinery expansion project to be completed by 2025

Infrastructure  -  Sep 02,2024  -

The expansion project of the Numaligarh Refinery (NRL) in Assam is expected to be completed by December 2025.

The expansion will facilitate capacity to increase to nine million tpa from the present three million tonne. The cost of the NRL expansion project project is around Rs 28,000 crore.

Currently, the physical progress is 65 percent. Total equity contribution will be around Rs 5,500 crore for this project with 69 percent as Oil India’s share. Rs 19,000 crore has already been invested in the project. Post its expansion, the refinery will operate at 50-60 percent capacity before running at its full capacity from 2026-27 once it stabilises.

NRL's expansion includes installing a six million tpa capacity refinery and associated crude oil terminals and pipeline, considering processing of Arab Light and Arab Heavy grades of crude oil. Also, the Assam government has increased its stake in the refinery from 12.35 percent to 26 percent.

Additionally, a cross country pipeline of around 1,640 km will be laid from Paradip Port in Odisha to Numaligarh for transporting nine MMTPA of imported crude.

Besides this, Oil India now plans to drill 78 wells in 2024-25 against 61 wells drilled in FY24, and targets to drill 100 wells in the subsequent years.
