The Delhi government's Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has approved the construction of a Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) at Sheikh Sarai in South Delhi, with a sanctioned budget of ₹151.81 crore. The Chief Minister has set a two-year target for the Public Works Department (PWD) to complete construction.

The facility will be built on a plot measuring around 6,300 square metres, with a total built-up area of approximately 18,300 square metres. The building will be developed as an integrated forensic facility designed to meet the specialised requirements of scientific investigation.

According to the government, the new laboratory is intended to help the Home Department and Delhi Police manage the rising demand for forensic investigations following the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The facility will provide additional scientific support alongside the existing Forensic Science Laboratory in Rohini, and is expected to primarily serve South, Southeast and Central Delhi districts.

Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the new RFSL would make examination of case-related evidence and submission of forensic reports faster and more efficient once operational, supporting quicker disposal of criminal cases in courts.
