CPCL plans desalination plant for its refinery project in Tamil Nadu

Infrastructure  -  Oct 16,2024  -

Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) plans to construct a large desalination plant as part of its upcoming mega refinery project in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The new refinery project will be supported by this desalination plant with a capacity of approx. 60 MLD.

CPCL is developing a nine-MTPA refinery at the Cauvery basin refinery in Nagapattinam district, through a joint venture with its parent company, Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL). CPCL’s contribution in the approved project cost of Rs 36,354 crore, is expected to be around Rs 3,030 crore for its 25 percent stake.

CPCL’s 5.8 million gallons per day (MGD) desalination plant at Kattupalli has a crucial role to play in meeting the water needs of its refinery operations. This facility is powered by renewable energy generated from a 17.6-MW wind farm in Dindigul, in an environmentally sustainable endeavour.

The company maintains its focus on implementing sewage reclamation, tertiary treatment plants, and desalination facilities.
