Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) is expected to commission a record nine GW of thermal power generation capacity in the ongoing financial year, marking the highest annual addition of thermal power capacity in India.
This target is more than four times the average annual commissioning by BHEL, significantly contributing to the country’s existing 237 GW of thermal power capacity. The total market value of these projects is approx. Rs 65,000 crore. These projects, which were awarded to BHEL by power generation companies, including NTPC, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh since 2017.
Despite some delays related to land availability and green approvals, these issues were resolved with consistent follow-ups by the Centre. In comparison, BHEL's recent commissioning efforts included 1,705 MW in 2021-22, 1,460 MW in 2022-23, and a similar capacity in 2023-24. This significant uptick in capacity addition follows the formation of a dedicated team by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) to address project-related hurdles.
The Ministry has been closely monitoring the projects at each stage to expedite their completion, ensuring that timelines are met through a subdivided and closely regulated approach.
