BASF Explores New MDI Production Complex in Dahej, Gujarat, Secures Industrial Land
BASF is exploring a major expansion in India through its subsidiary, BASF India Polyurethanes Private Limited, which has secured industrial land in Dahej, Gujarat, for a potential new MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) production complex. The company is in the advanced stages of a feasibility study for the project.
MDI is a key building block for polyurethane products used across applications including building insulation, refrigeration, automotive components, furniture and consumer goods. Dr. Stephan Kothrade, member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer of BASF SE, said the investment would be in line with the company's "Winning Ways" strategy and its local-for-local approach, expanding manufacturing to serve customers in India and neighbouring markets with locally produced MDI.
The final investment decision will depend on the outcome of the feasibility study and remain subject to all necessary approvals. Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF's Monomers division, said the company continues to invest in its global MDI production network, noting that its $1 billion MDI expansion project in Geismar, US, is entering its final commissioning phase, while it evaluates the next step for its global MDI footprint, which also includes facilities in Antwerp, Belgium; Chongqing and Caojing (Shanghai), China; and Yeosu, South Korea.
BASF already operates an MDI splitter and polyurethane production facilities at Dahej, providing a base for the proposed new complex.
