Alstom to manufacture railway traction batteries in India

Manufacturing  -  Jul 09,2024  -

Alstom plans to begin manufacturing large batteries for railway traction components in India. Railway systems, such as metro rail and Vande Bharat trains, can be powered by the batteries.

Alstom will eventually begin producing native cells in India. The business plans to manufacture these massive batteries locally at its Maneja facility in Gujarat, which is currently producing rail components.

In the event of a power outage, the new battery technology can provide supplemental power to diesel and electric railway powertrains.

Initially, the batteries will be imported from France, but Alstom aims to transition to manufacturing indigenous cells in India gradually.
