The sugar mills in Chandigarh, Haryana, will now also produce CNG gas. On the recommendation of the Sugar Federation, the decision to create CNG was made in accordance with the Central Government's directives to use biomass as fuel.
According to the decision, this CNG would be produced using the mealy or press mud leftover from the manufacturing of sugar in sugar mills. The process for soliciting bids has begun. A CNG generation unit would be installed in a mill for a cost of roughly Rs 20 crore.
It should be mentioned that the Central Government has requested that enterprises in Haryana gradually use biomass as fuel in order to minimise their reliance on coal and their carbon dioxide emissions.
Although the sugar mills of Haryana already run on biomass. Here sugarcane residue is used as fuel. In spite of this, despite the instructions of the government, the sugar mills decided to produce CNG for environmental protection. According to the decision, CBG ie compressed biogas will be produced in 10 sugar mills. The fuel for gas production will be used only from the mills.
