NLC India is thinking about broadening into the search for important minerals like lithium and is also investigating ventures into the gasification of coal.
It also plans to increase the size of its battery energy storage systems (BESS).
CMD of NLC India In light of the significance of these minerals for a nation's economy, Prasanna Kumar emphasised the potential of discovering precious minerals besides coal and lignite.
During Kumar's visit to the World Mining Congress 2023 in Brisbane, it was clear that the company has recently focused on materials needed for battery storage, such as lithium, cobalt, palladium, and nickel.
As reported by Business Line, NLC India has already made strides in the BESS sector, installing a 20 MW plant with an 8 MW BESS capacity in Andaman and Nicobar.
This move significantly improved the region’s environment by reducing reliance on diesel-generated power. The success of this project has led to requests for additional 20 MWh of battery storage capacity.
While the potential for revenue expansion in BESS is promising, Kumar acknowledged that cost considerations remain a challenge. However, the company is actively monitoring the market and intends to participate in battery storage tenders.
