The Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant fire in March of this year led the local government entities inside the city limits to come up with new waste management strategies.
Thrikkakara municipality in Kochi was the first local entity to implement biobins as part of the Clean Thrikkakara effort to address the situation.
Due to a lack of interest, the municipality was compelled to give up on the project. A tender for the construction of a decentralised biowaste treatment plant at Kakkanad will soon be released by the authorities.
Currently, the local body pays a third-party agency to clear their waste, spending Rs 4 per kilogram of waste. The Haritha Karma Sena workers collect waste from across all households within the municipality and hand it over to the third-party company.
