Karnataka's first waste-to-energy plant to be operational in 2 weeks at Bidadi

Power Generation  -  May 17,2024  -

A joint endeavour of Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is likely to supply power to two lakh houses in less than 15 days from a waste-to-energy plant at Bidadi.

This will be Karnataka's first waste-to-energy plant to go operational. The Rs 260-crore, 11.5-MW plant will have an annual operation period of 7,500 hours and will bear 75% of the load in year one.

A KPCL official said,"Construction work is completed. Now we are waiting for BBMP to send their waste to the plant."

"The project had to be completed in 24 months, but the Covid pandemic hindered work. Finally, we resumed work on the project in 2022, and it was completed within the stipulated time. This is the first time in KPCL's history we're using waste to generate electricity," added the official.

The project comes as a relief to the civic body as it will reduce the quantity of solid waste ending up in landfills. The foundation stone for the plant was laid in Dec 2020.
