JSW Energy’s next big move in renewable sector revealed

Infrastructure  -  Nov 25,2024  -

JSW Energy is planning to establish a wind turbine blade manufacturing facility in Karnataka.

The plant aims to reduce dependency on imports and ensure a steady supply of wind turbine generators (WTGs), ultimately cutting renewable energy project costs, according to industry sources.

The estimated cost to set up a facility capable of assembling 400-500 turbines annually is around $50 million. With surplus land at its 12.5 million tonnes per annum steel plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, JSW Energy is well-positioned to house the new unit. This initiative aligns with the company’s focus on renewable energy, as it already operates a 225 MW solar power plant near Vijayanagar, dedicated to powering the steel plant.

Earlier this year, JSW Renewable Technologies, a subsidiary of JSW Neo Energy, entered a technology licensing agreement with China’s Sany Renewable Energy. This collaboration will enable JSW to manufacture 3.6 MW WTGs in India. While this technology agreement is in place, JSW Energy is exploring options to procure 4 MW and 5 MW WTGs from Sany for specific site requirements, as larger turbines are preferred in constrained locations.

India is currently the second-largest wind supply chain manufacturing hub globally, as noted by the Global Wind Energy Council. JSW Energy’s investment in domestic blade manufacturing strengthens its position in the renewable energy sector while contributing to India’s self-reliance in wind energy infrastructure.
