Hyundai plans Rs 1,500 crore modernisation at Chennai factory

Hyundai Motor India has submitted a pre-feasibility report for a comprehensive revamp and modernisation of its manufacturing facility near Chennai. The automotive major is set to invest approx. crore in this expansion.

Hyundai Motor India’s facility at Irungattukottai in Chennai covers an area of 538 acres and has a production capacity of 8.50 lakh cars per year. The plans to modernise it span the enhancement of manufacturing processes, integration of advanced technologies, and augmenting overall output of the plant. The proposed expansion will focus on increasing the size of the plant, taking its footprint from 5.40 lakh sq. mtrs. to 7.21 lakh sq. mtrs.

This will involve acquiring an additional 1.81 lakh sq. mtrs. of land, with the aim to improve operational efficiency and boost production capacity. The expansion is expected to generate employment opportunities for 155 persons.

The factory currently employs over 19,700 people, including regular staff, trainees and contract workers.
