The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of the International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay, Great Nicobar Island, is now being finalized by the Union Cabinet.
The project is expected to be built at a cost of Rs 44,000 crore. The suggested project will be developed over the course of four phases.
Phase I's capacity is expected to be 4 MTEUs (Million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), with a planned progressive rise to 16 MTEUs by 2058.
This phase's construction is expected to cost approximately Rs 19,000 crore and be finished by 2028.
The project received environmental clearance in November 2022 from the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), along with stage I Forest clearance.
It has also obtained “In-principle” approval from the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, for the holistic development of Great Nicobar Island.
ICPT aims to become a leading container transhipment port by utilizing its strategic location (40 nautical miles from the international shipping trade route), natural water depth of over 20m, and ability to handle transhipment cargo from nearby ports, including Indian ports.
