BMC wards to get units for recycling of solid waste

Automotive Industries  -  Apr 02,2024  -

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking at the possibilities of establishing a material recovery facility (MRF) for segregation and recycling of solid waste in several wards across Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur.

The authorities have commenced the process to engage an agency for setting up of the MRFs.

The authorities are in the process to procure new waste carrying trucks as the existing ones find it difficult to scale up the roads leading to Dhapa dumping ground.

As per the plan, these facilities will be set up at wards 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22 and 27 covering Baguiati, Kestopur, Kaikhali and areas surrounding the airport. These will also come up at wards 28, 29, 32, 36, 38 and 41, covering most parts of Salt Lake and its bordering areas.

The civic body has also been mulling over setting up of organic waste compactors—which turn waste into energy— and procurement of advanced mechanical waste collection equipment.

In its annual budget for 2024-25 fiscal, the BMC has stressed upon developing a robust waste management system for all its 41 wards.

Officials said that regular monitoring by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has laid much importance on the waste collection, transport and processing systems.
