The building of Mumbai’s 11.84 km Thane – Borivali twin tunnel project was announced to have two lowest bidders: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL).

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) road project by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) would have two 10.8 km long road tunnels underneath it as well as a combined 1 km of approach roads on either end.

The 3 lane tunnels, which connect Magathane’sEkta Nagar in Borivali and Tikuji-Ni-Wadi at Manpada in Thane, will be constructed utilising 4 giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs) at a maximum depth of 23 metres below the surface.

MMRDA had invited tenders for its civil construction under 2 civil packages in December 2022 with unknown estimates and a 4 year completion deadline. The project’s total estimated cost is Rs. 13,200 crore.
