The Tamil Nadu roadways department wants to convert seven major roads in Chennai (103.5 km) into ‘smart roads,’ which will include amenities such as speed limits of 50 kmph, as well as walkways, cycling lanes, and parking spaces.
WiFi poles, CCTV cameras, information kiosks, and other facilities will be installed on the highways to help better control traffic.
Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, Grand Western Trunk (GWT) Road, Grand Northern Trunk (GNT) Road, Inner Ring Road, Velachery Bypass Road, Marmalong Bridge-Irumbuliyur Road, and Mount Poonamallee-Avadi Road are the seven roads that have been chosen.
On Monday, a tender was issued for the completion of a thorough project report (DPR).
