To reduce emissions, the Southern Railway will build solar power plants at 18 stations in northern Tamil Nadu, including 17 in Chennai and its suburbs.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has approved the plants’ operation, according to Ganesh, the Chennai divisional railway manager, who spoke during the division’s 67th Railway Week festivities.
Egmore, MGR Central, Tambaram, Chengalpet, Arakkonam, Jolarpet, Singaperumal Koil, Perungalathur, Guduvanchery, Tiruvallur, Tiruttani, Mambalam, Palavanthangal, Guindy, Beach, Velachery, Avadi, and Perambur are the stations in question.
“Our goal is to make the Chennai division carbon neutral and garbage free,” he added.
Chennai Central has become the first Southern Railway station to use solar energy to satisfy its energy requirement throughout the day. Solar plants with a capacity of 5 KWp have been installed.
