The projected textile park project next to a forest region in Ludhiana has been abandoned by the government of Punjab, a state in north-western India.
The PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) concept, under which the Central government proposes seven parks in various states in a PPP format, has been recommended by the state to establish the park.
Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, made the decision during a meeting with an NGO that had been opposing the park over environmental concerns related to its vicinity to the Mattewara Forest and the Sutlej River.
The goal of the plan to establish the textile park was to aid the local textile industry in Ludhiana and the surrounding region.
Under PM MITRA, the Central government plans to give permission to set up seven textile parks, which will be developed by a special purpose vehicle owned by state governments and the Central government in PPP mode. Union cabinet has approved ₹4,445 crore for the scheme. Many states including Punjab had proposed to set up a park under the scheme.
