PMC to double its capacity to process construction waste with new plant

By constructing a new factory in the city’s southwest, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) intends to treble its capacity for processing and managing building and demolition debris.

“The PMC has successfully commissioned a plant to process construction waste in Wagholi. However, the waste generated from construction is a lot more than the existing processing capacity of the civic body. Thus we have decided to set up plants in different parts of the city that private agencies will operate,” said Asha Raut, deputy municipal commissioner and incharge of the civic solid waste management department.

The existing plant processes 250 tonnes of construction waste daily. Raut said the new plant would double the processing capacity.

The private party will entirely finance the project and have revenue from the PMC in the form of a tipping fee per tonne of waste and income from the sale of byproducts produced while processing the construction and demolition waste.
