The expansion of the Okhla waste-to-energy plant in south Delhi has been recommended for environmental clearance by the government’s expert appraisal committee (EAC).
The waste-to-energy (WTE) plant is run by the Timarpur-Okhla Garbage Management Company, a private enterprise owned by the Jindal Group and generating 23 MW of power from the burning of municipal solid waste.
It has now asked for authorization to add 17 MW to the electricity generation capacity. The proposal was discussed by the EAC of the Union Environment Ministry in a meeting on November 30 of last year, and it was suggested that the expansion project be given environmental approval.
The environment ministry had previously set a limit on the plant’s waste usage at 1,950 metric tonnes and its power output at 23 megawatts.
