The state government of Odisha has started the land purchase process as part of a major push for the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport at Puri in response to favourable obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) survey results. In the Sipasarubali and Sandhapur sections of the Brahmagiri tehsil, about 1,164 acres, including 68 acres of forest land and 221.48 acres of private property, will be acquired for the greenfield project.
The project has been prioritised, with a 2025 completion date as the goal. The National Institute of Rural Development and Environmental Science (NIRDES) under the NabakrushnaChoudhury Centre for Development Studies conducted the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for the mega airport project in preparation for the purchase of private land.
Additionally, the project necessitates the purchase of private land, including 68.11 acres in Sandhapur and 153.37 acres in Sipasarubali.
However, no rehabilitation and resettlement is required as the land parcels are free of human habitations.
