The planned 32-kilometer greenfield project in Mohali has been put on hold after the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) determined that farmers’ demand for more compensation for land acquisition was financially unviable.
The 700-crore road, which runs from IT Chowk (PR-7) near the Chandigarh International Airport to the Kurali-Chandigarh road, was built to relieve traffic congestion in Chandigarh and Zirakpur by offering an alternate route for vehicles heading to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir from Delhi.
The authority’s decision comes after it approved raising compensation for land acquisition in September of last year, despite protests from land owners, largely farmers.
