JSW Energy, one of India’s leading power producing businesses, wants to build pumped storage hydropower (PSH) facilities in five states, generating a total of 10 GW of electricity.
According to a top corporate executive, the Mumbai-based company, which started with its 35,500-crore first PSH project in Maharashtra earlier this financial year, is in talks for similar projects in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Orissa, and Chhattisgarh.
The technology utilised in PSH plants is similar to that used in conventional hydropower facilities. Water flows down from the upper reservoir through turbines that rotate generators to make energy, generating electricity. When the demand for electricity falls, the turbines reverse direction, pumping the water back into the upper reservoir.
