Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL), one of the country’s largest steel makers, plans to build two coal gasification-based DRI facilities, one in Angul and the other in Raigarh. The facilities, each having a 2 million tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity, are projected to be operational by the end of FY25.
Coal is transformed to synthesis gas in the coal gasification process, which may then be utilised to produce direct reduced iron in a shaft furnace (used in steel making). The gas may also be utilised to make electricity, gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products.
It’s worth noting that JSPL’s Angul plant is home to the country’s sole coal gasification technology.
