The government announced that a contract for the Haldia inland waterway terminal has been given, and that the jetty will be ready to transfer Exim and inland freight to the Pandu terminal in Guwahati, which connects the Northeast with Kolkata via the National Waterway 2.
This will give a viable alternative to the Chicken Neck route for cargo transportation to and from the Northeast to international countries and other Indian states.
The Siliguri Corridor, a short strip of territory that connects the Northeast with the rest of India, is known as the Chicken Neck route.
