A multi-million euro investment in cutting-edge technology has been made public by INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe, allowing it to collaborate with converters, brands, and retailers to create flexible packaging film that is easier to use and more recyclable.
The investment might aid in reducing the annual amount of garbage delivered to landfills by about one million tonnes.
INEOS and partners will collaborate to research, design, and produce flexible packaging film made from polyethylene and polypropylene utilising novel multilayer, blown line technology with Machine Direction Orientation (MDO), using less polymers and thereby improving the product’s potential to be recycled.
Flexible packaging films extend food shelf life, which helps customers control household expenses. They are a low-carbon alternative for shipping food and other items. However today’s multi-material products combine polymers from different chemical families, making them difficult to recycle.
Reducing the number of polymers used to produce packaging film will make packaging that is designed to be recycled.
