For the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd.’s (NPCIL) domestic nuclear program-phase one being developed at Gorakhpur, Haryana (units – 1 to 4 (GHAVP)), and Kaiga (Kaiga-5 and 6) Karnataka, India, GE Steam Power has signed a $165 million contract with BHEL for the supply of three nuclear steam turbines out of six units.
This domestic initiative consists of twelve 700 MWe units being constructed by NPCIL using their proprietary pressurised heavy water reactor nuclear reactor technology (PHWR). It will provide the nation with 8.4 GW of carbon dioxide-free electricity in total, which is more than enough to power over 14 million homes.
In 2018, GE and BHEL had signed a business cooperation agreement and a License and Technology Transfer Agreement to enable them to manufacture nuclear steam turbines of 700 MW. Due to this partnership, the two companies are well positioned to respond to the country needs for lower carbon source of energy.
