Hyderabad is increasing the capacity of its Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants from 24 MW to 101 MW and creating wealth out of waste as a model for other big metro areas in the nation to strive to and imitate.
A total of five additional plants with a combined capacity of 77 MW will be active by 2024 in addition to the 24 MW WTE plant at Jawahar Nagar, which is currently fully operational.
The five plants are being built in Jawahar Nagar (24 MW), Dundigal (15 MW), Pyaranagar, Medak district (15 MW), Yacharam (12 MW), and Bibinagar (11 MW), and they are all intended to build a sustainable future for Hyderabad and its surrounding areas.
Once the plants are operational, they will be sufficient to recycle the waste generated in Hyderabad and the Urban Local Bodies where they are being set up for the next 30 years, an official from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department said.
