On June 25, 2015, the Indian government announced the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), which aims to transform 100 cities into Smart Cities. From January 2016 to June 2018, the cities were chosen following four rounds of competition.
As of November 12th, 2021, these Smart Cities had tendered out 6,452 projects worth Rs. 1,84,998 crore (US$ 24.67 billion), of which work orders have been given in 5,809 projects worth Rs. 1,56,571 crore (US$ 20.88 billion) and 3,131 projects for Rs. 53,175 crore (US$ 7.09 billion).
The Central Government has released Rs. 27,235 crore (US$) to States/Union Territories for Smart Cities as of November 12, 2021.
Out of the 1,910 Smart City Proposals (SCPs) of Smart Cities selected in Round-1, 1,768 projects (93 percent) costing Rs. 47,006 crore (US$ 6.29 billion) have either been finished or are in the process of being implemented. The implementation period for SCM has been extended to June 2023, and all Round-I cities are expected to finish their projects on schedule.
